Govinda Gallery

Gallery is delighted to be presenting six photographers who have been documenting current rock & roll bands from the Washington, DC, Maryland, and Philadelphia area. Emily Assiran, Jessica Flynn, Vivienne Foster, Chris Suspect, Jordan Swartz, and Clarissa Villondo’s photographs capture the energy and environment of bands that in many ways represent the face of musicians, their music, and community in the music scene today.

There is a reception for the photographers at Gypsy Sally’s on Thursday December 19th from 7:00 to 11:00 p.m. that will feature performances by three of the bands documented in the exhibition; The Sniffs, Collapser, and Boardroom Heroes.

4” x 6” East Coast Rock & Roll Photography 2013 is a Govinda Gallery ‘pop-up’ exhibition and opens at Gypsy Sally’s, 3401 K Street, Washington DC, 20017, December 3rd, 2013 and continues through January 4th, 2014.

EMILY ASSIRAN is a fine art and commercial photographer based in Philadelphia. She is a graduate of Tyler School of Art, with a BFA in Photography. Her images in this exhibition represent four years of photographing punk rock bands throughout the east coast of the United States.

JESSICA FLYNN decided when she was 14 that she was going to be a music photographer. Stoned and looking at a photograph of Conor Oberst from Bright Eyes, along with her Dad being in a band, she was inspired to start photographing musicians. Jessica says she then “became a music photographer and stopped doing drugs”. She graduated from University of the Arts and lives in Philadelphia.

VIVIENNE FOSTER grew up between Washington, DC and Austin, Texas. She graduated from the Corcoran College of Art + Design with a BFA in Fine Art Photography in 2010. Since that time Foster has been working as Assistant to the Director at Govinda Gallery. She plans to attend graduate school to study music management in 2015.

CHRIS SUSPECT has played in various DC punk bands since 1993 and recently discovered his passion for photography. He often makes his way back to dingy clubs, bars, and basements to document the District’s hardcore and punk scene. His work is being seen in a gallery for the first time in this exhibition. Suspect recently received first place in Photo District News’ 2013 Contest “The Scene: Event and Nightlife Photography”.

JORDAN SWARTZ is a photographer and independent book publisher working in Washington DC. He is the founder of Empty Stretch, a publishing and design collective who seek to disseminate the work of emerging photographers through limited run zines and non-traditional shows and exhibitions. He would “very much like it if your band took him on tour”.

CLARISSA VILLONDO is a native Northern Virginian and is a live performance photographer in the Washington, DC Metropolitan Area. Clarissa is the co-founder of Indie Bands with a Mission, a not-for-profit organization that organizes small concerts for charities.

This exhibition is curated by Vivienne Foster and organized by Govinda Gallery.
