Rare Painting by Jimi Hendrix Being Auctioned

by Chris Murray on June 19, 2012

On June 24th an extremely rare painting by Jimi Hendrix is being auctioned by Bonhams in Los Angeles. The painting is on the cover of Bonhams Entertainment Memorabelia auction catalogue. Painted in 1967 Flower Demon, as the painting is titled, was exhibited at the Tate and Whitney Museums as part of the acclaimed exhibition Summer of Love: the Art of the Psychedelic Era. The description of the painting in Bonhams online catalogue features a very interesting story about the painting by Donovan, who Hendrix showed Flower Demon to after he had completed it.

We love Jimi Hendrix here at Govinda Gallery. Gered Mankowitz’s extraordinary portrait of Hendrix, taken in London the same year that Jimi painted Flower Demon, is featured in the traveling museum exhibiton Sound and Vision: Monumental Rock & Roll Photography, currently at the Hunter Museum of Fine Art in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and co-organized by Govinda Gallery. The same image was used on the front of the invitation card for the exhibition La Revolucion Del Rock & Roll at Fototeca De Cuba in Havana. That groundbreaking exhibition in the spring of 2002 was also organized by Govinda Gallery.

Also featured in the Sound and Vision exhibiton are the photographs of Baron Wolman. I reccomend Baron’s recently published book Every Picture Tells A Story: The Rolling Stone Years, which features his photograph of Jimi Hendrix on the cover of the book.

Gered Mankowtiz and Baron Wolman’s photographs are available through Govinda Gallery.
