Taschen has published an extraordinary collection of photographs of The Rolling Stones in their new book simply titled The Rolling Stones. It is the best collection of photographs of the Rolling Stones in a single book. We love the book here at Govinda Gallery as 17 of the photographers featured in the book have shown their work at Govinda Gallery, the majority of them first exhibitions of their photographs.

imageThe cover of the book is stunning and features Gered Mankowitz’s compelling color portrait of the Rolling Stones taken on Primrose Hill in London in 1966. That session produced the cover of the Rolling Stones’ album Between the Buttons. Gered Mankowitz’s photographs were first shown at Govinda Gallery in 1993 in the now-legendary Jimi Hendrix exhibition. Mankowitz’s first one-person exhibition at Govinda Gallery in 1995 launched his book From Masons Yard to Primrose Hill, published by Genesis Publications.

We have in stock one copy of From Masons Yard to Primrose Hill. It is in its original shipping box from Genesis Publications and the book has not even been unwrapped… it has never been opened. It is copy 242 of 1,750 and is signed by Gered Mankowitz. This copy is available for $1,300.

Gered Mankowitz is one of the cornerstones of Govinda Gallery’s photography program featuring significant images documenting musical artists. Along with several exhibitions at Govinda Gallery, Gered’s work has been featured in several museum shows organized by Govinda.

A retrospective book of Mankowitz’s photographs has just been published in the United States, Gered Mankowiz: 50 Year of Rock and Roll Photography. That book features essays by Annie Lennox, Keith Richards, Bill Wyman, and Peter York. Along with photographs of the Jimi Hendrix Experience and The Rolling Stones, Mankowitz’s book features photos of Donovan, Small Faces, Chrissy Hynde, Hot Chocolate, Georgie Fame, The Sweet, Wham, Moody Blues, Del Shannon, Spooky Tooth, Soft Machine, Electric Prunes, Spencer Davis Group, Elton John, Kula Shaker, Kate Bush, Led Zeppelin, Joan Jett, Marianne Faithful, and many more.

Mankowitz’s black and white photo from the Stones’ Primrose Hill session is also featured in the just released U.S. edition of the new and well-written biography of Brian Jones, Brian Jones: The Making of the Rolling Stones (Viking).
