Terraplane Sun, Greg Gorman, and Eric Burdon, Los Angeles

I went to Los Angeles the day of the Grammy Awards and there was a big buzz in town. The night after the Grammys I went to The Satellite in east LA to see the band Terraplane Sun, whose amazing set had the entire audience on it’s feet screaming for more. I know the lead guitarist Johnny Zambetti quite well as his father John and I formed a band in New York City in 1963 called The Malibooz, a british-invasion/surf/soul band. Walter Egan joined our band in 1964 and went on to a great career in rock and roll, which included his top-ten hit Magnet and Steel, produced by Lindsay Buckingham and with background vocals by Stevie Nicks. Terraplane Sun were so good live that I wouldn’t be surprised if they receive a Grammy themselves before long.

The next day I visited friend and photo dealer extraordinaire David Fahey at his amazing gallery on La Brea. I collaborated with David in 1993 in presenting Linda McCartney’s first exhibition of photographs called Sixties: Portraits of an Era at Govinda Gallery. We also worked together on Phil Stern’s Hollywood exhibit in 1993 and Jim Marshall’s Photographs exhibition at Govinda Gallery in 2002. That evening I had a most wonderful dinner at photographer Greg Gorman’s home. As always, Greg had a terrific group of friend’s for dinner including Andrew and Gaukhar Atherton, mesmerizing performers from Cirque du Soleil . A good time was had by all. Greg has had a number of brilliant shows at Govinda Gallery, including Photographs in 1990 and Inside Life in 1997. Greg’s photographs are featured in the Sound and Vision: Monumental Rock & Roll Photography exhibition, which is organized by the Columbus Museum and Govinda Gallery and is currently at The Huntsville Museum of Art in Hunstville, Alabama. Greg’s monumental portrait of Michael Jackson is one of his photographs in that exhibition. Greg Gorman’s photographs are available through Govinda Gallery.

On Valentine’s day I went to the Grammy Museum to attend “An Evening with Eric Burdon”, the great blues singer from legendary band The Animals. Grammy Museum executive director Bob Santelli interviewed Eric at the Grammy Museum theatre and Eric performed a number of songs after the Q & A following the interview. It was great to see Eric and Bob Santelli. The Grammy Museum launched the SITES/Govinda Gallery exhibition Elvis at 21: Photographs by Alfred Wertheimer in 2010.

During my week in Los Angeles I was knocked out by the dynamic murals I saw in Venice Beach. Here are a few of them.

You really “made the scene” in LA connecting with friends, bands, private parties and the ‘best jazz to be heard!” Carlotta Hester;s photos are centered, offering a new perspective, imagination, and sense of humor to the Venice Beach Murals! Great visit!

just looked at photos and murals fantastic.eric burden brings back many good memories to me.i saw him with the animals in college in leeds in 1967 a great time to study and drink beer.i still listen to him on my ipod fantastic Geordie accent.hope both of you are well.
